Lego Identity crises

This quarter we have been examining a variety of identity issues. It seems that even toys are not immune from them!
A news article headlines from the Los Angeles Times read,  "A new Lego line for girls is offensive, critics say"

Read the article and watch the commercial for Lego. Do you agree with the critics? Give  me your thoughts in at least 50 words. Link here

  1. This seems like a pointless argument, but the critics do have a good point even though it sounds like they may just be paranoid with these pieces. What did they expect LEGO to make the pieces look like, fat people. I am also wondering why LEGO even thought about making gender specific pieces while when I was growing up the characters always had interchangeable parts and most of the pieces were bricks.

  2. I dont really see a problem with this. I used to play with legos when I was little and it never bothered me that they were more for boys because they are just toys. I dont think that it will hurt the lego company to make legos more suitable for girls but I dont think that it was necessary either.

  3. To me it really isn't a problem, cuz its just toys, and throughout the years i have seen guy Lego toys like batman, and different things and it was never a problem, so why now. But it doesn't matter what kind of toy they make as long as he childrens still have fun while playing with it, because isn't that the main reason for making it though.

  4. This is a ridiculous argument, because i don't see how Lego girl toys could cause a girl to think that she is not skinny even though it's make believe. I played with Lego toys and games in the past, but I didn't start to feel like my body wasn't up to standard to the toys that I played. Toys are made out of plastic are meant to last for very long time and are not hinder by death, but the human body changes throughout its life and at the end of its life, it dies.

  5. This argument literally makes me lose all hope in humanity. Because it's sad how stupid people are. Obviously the lego commercial was advertising their new female lego toys, but stupid, paranoid people have to translate it into something entirely unrelated. Those people who translate it like that are probably single woman with 24 cats and 30 cat calendars.

    1. Lego people come in one size. It doesn't affect girls of any shape, because the Legos have no shape.

  6. The people who made all the dumb comments need to find a life. How can a toy made for little kids make them feel as if they are not skinny enough. Please even if lego made fat people they will have people saying lego is to fat and make skinny people feel bad about themselves. Humans are always going to find something wrong with anything some one does so basically this is a dumb debate.

  7. PERSONALLY I THINK LEGOS ARE FOR EVERYONE AND I HAD A DREAM THAT ONE DAY BOYS AND GIRLS FROM ALL GENDERS COULD PLAY WITH THE SAME LEGOS NO MATTER THE COLOR, JUST BECAUSE THERE ARE PINK LEGOS FOR GIRLS IS AMAZING I THINK AND THEY SAY THAT ARCHITECTS NOW ADAYS THAT ARE MAKING IT BIG WOULD PLAY WITH LEGOS WHENN THEY WERE YOUNGER.

    SINCERELY,

  9. I disagree with the critics because when little girls play with these legos they are not going to think about their appearance or eating disorders, they are just going to think about having fun with their friends. I don't get how people would think it would influence the way little girls think about themselves. They are just toys to play with they aren't real. The whole argument doesn't make sense.

  10. Honestly, I really don't think any kids will care about the "appearance," of the toys they're playing with as long as they have something to play with. Like really, the only reason a girl would even think about how her appearance contrasts with a toy's appearance is if someone makes a remark about it.

So it's all really not the company's fault, they're just trying to make a wider selection for the children.

  11. I can see how it would bother some people, though not me personally. It does show girls in a very stereotypical way, and it could be rather annoying to the girls who don't want to be like that. I personally, am not a girl, so this isn't much of an issue for me.

  12. I can’t believe the critics are so mad that Lego came out with a girl’s product but it okay for Lego to make products for boys that not right. Girls like to play with legos to and girls also play with neft and now nerf has products for girls to play with because girls do not just like plain colors they like pretty colors on the product. I believe it was a good decision for Lego to make this product.

  13. This is not considered to me as a real issue. I guess I could see where people are coming from but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter to me. Women should never define themselves or even compare themselves to a toy. The commercial was just used to advertise a product. If one feels like the commercial was communicating something different, then just don’t buy their product.

  14. who cares what they do, its just a new product so they can try to make money, they are trying to appeal to the females to try to make profit, I don't see a problem with this at all. The girls should be happy that there is a girl version now.

  15. I mean I guess I can see how it may be bothersome to some people but to me I really don't care! legos are legos! im sure kids will not care about the color size or shape of them. The company was just trying to make profit. SO yeah I see no problem with it at all!

  16. I think its okay i never liked legos so i dont have much opinion...But its just a way to not come out with the same stuff over and over again...Most of the same stuff is coming out is the stuff that they say is brand new, most of it is just remakes of stuff they stopped making years before so its better because its different...So I think its a great thing.

  17. I can see how this would bother some people, but personally no body is really worried about Legos at this point. The company was just trying to reach out instead of just advertising to boys. No girl is going to be upset because she is not the size of a lego. I don't blame the company honestly i don't see anything wrong with the commercial

  18. I don't agree with the critics, I think they are over reacting to me these are just LEGO Barbies. I don't think this is influencing an eating disorder or overt forms of sexism. They are just toys for children to play with the children see it as sexism this is just what the adults think and how they see it.
